Even after years of cycling throughout this region, I continue to discover novel and breathtaking trails, as well as unveil previously unknown connections between them, which has been instrumental in maintaining my long rides feeling revitalized and engaging.
My latest excursion took me on an 85K ride that combined several familiar trails (W&OD, Custis, Rock Creek, Mt Vernon) with two entirely new ones: the Rachel Carson Greenway and the Anacostia Riverwalk.
During the initial third of the ride distance, I encountered one of the heaviest rainstorms I've ever experienced while cycling in this region, and, consequently, sought shelter beneath a bridge due to severely reduced visibility.
Carrying my bike over fallen tree barriers and navigating through "mini-lakes" created by the tempest along the trails only served to heighten the sense of adventure! ;)
All in all, it was a thrilling experience that left me eager to return and explore these great new trails further.
